ollama-capability-check-api-show
Before substituting a model into a vision (or other capability) slot, check its capabilities via POST /api/show - don't assume a tag supports the capability.
When this applies
Selecting an installed Ollama model for a capability-specific role (vision, embedding, tools).
Preconditions
- Ollama daemon reachable
- A candidate model is installed
Do this
POST /api/show {"model": "<tag>"} and read the capabilities field; only slot models listing the needed capability; otherwise pull a suitable model.
What you should see
Capability mismatches caught at preflight, not mid-batch.
How it fails if ignored
A text-only model in a vision slot fails late or silently produces garbage verdicts.
Do not use when
NOT needed when the exact model tag's capabilities were already verified on this host.
